A kitchen layout is the most consequential decision in any kitchen project. You can always change the cabinet finish, swap out the countertop material, or upgrade the hardware after the fact. But you cannot easily change a layout that does not work without demolishing the entire kitchen and starting again.
Getting the layout right before fabrication begins is the single most important investment of time in any kitchen renovation. This guide explains how to approach kitchen layout planning for a UAE villa — covering the principles that determine whether a kitchen functions well, the layout types most common in UAE homes, and the planning decisions specific to the UAE context.
The Work Triangle
Every functional kitchen is organised around three primary activity zones: refrigeration (where food is stored), preparation (where food is cleaned and cut), and cooking (where food is heated). The relationship between these three zones is called the work triangle, and the efficiency of that triangle determines how tiring the kitchen is to use.
An efficient work triangle has short paths between the three zones — ideally no single leg longer than 2,700mm and no single leg shorter than 1,200mm. When the triangle is well-proportioned, the kitchen feels efficient. When one leg is too long, the kitchen feels tiring. When two zones are too close together, they create crowding and obstruct movement.
UAE Villa Kitchen Layout Types
The L-shaped kitchen places cabinets on two adjacent walls. This is the most common layout in UAE villas with moderate kitchen space. The work triangle fits naturally in the corner of the L.
The galley kitchen places cabinets on two parallel walls. Common in older UAE villas and apartment kitchens, where the kitchen space is a dedicated corridor. Galley kitchens are efficient when the two walls are close enough to create short movement paths.
The U-shaped kitchen places cabinets on three walls. This is the highest-storage layout type and works well in square kitchen spaces.
The open-plan kitchen integrates the kitchen into a larger living and dining space, with an island separating the kitchen zone from the living zone. The planning consideration unique to open-plan kitchens is extraction.
Appliance Placement
The refrigerator should be positioned at the entry end of the kitchen’s work zone. This positioning means that family members going to the refrigerator for drinks or snacks do not have to walk through the active cooking area.
The dishwasher should be adjacent to the sink and as close as possible to the crockery and glassware storage. Built-in ovens should be at an ergonomically sensible height — ideally with the oven cavity between waist and eye height.
The cooker hood must be positioned directly above the hob, sized to match or exceed the hob width, and set at the correct height for effective extraction.
Storage Planning
Before planning cabinet layouts, take stock of what the kitchen needs to hold: the number and sizes of pots and pans, the large appliances, the dry goods inventory, the condiment and spice inventory, the cleaning products, and the bin and recycling requirements.
Base units should prioritise deep drawers over hinged doors wherever possible. Deep drawers are significantly more practical for pot, pan, and appliance storage. Wall units should extend to the ceiling wherever possible in UAE villa kitchens to eliminate dust-trap gaps and maximise storage.
UAE-Specific Considerations
Gas cooking is the UAE norm — the gas stub-out position must be confirmed before designing the base unit layout. Moving a gas stub-out requires a plumber and municipality approval.
Air conditioning in UAE kitchens must be planned in coordination with the cooker hood. A strong extraction hood and a well-positioned AC unit working simultaneously create the most comfortable cooking environment in summer.
A utility kitchen or scullery adjacent to the main kitchen is increasingly common in UAE villa renovations. The scullery takes messy preparation work away from the main kitchen, keeping the primary cooking space cleaner and more presentable.
